The electron beam instability in spatial periodical structures is studied. The dispersion equations to describe such instabilities are derived and discussed. It is shown that the various regimes of generation exist depending on the quantities of the electron beam velocity spread, quantum recoil and linewidth of spontaneous emission. The effect of quantum recoil can influence on instability process in the optical and infrared spectral range even. The generation equation describing the starting currents and increments of an absolute instability are derived. It is shown that in vicinity of diffraction root degeneration the new law of dependence of starting generation current and gain on system parameters arises. The advantages of volume distributed feedback (VDFB) are analyzed. The influence of guiding magnetic field on generation process leads to gain doubling in the case when the transverse motion contributes to instability. The generation in the surface scheme and in the case when electron propagate near the slowing elements is studied. It is shown in this work that VDFB is more preferred alternative in comparison with ordinary distributed feedback and creation of new type of FEL, the volume FEL (VFEL) has a good perspectives.
